Deciding to see a psychiatrist is often the hardest step. The second-hardest is knowing how to choose the right one. Cairo has no shortage of options, from large hospital departments to solo private clinics to online consultation platforms — but not every psychiatrist is the right fit for every person, and the difference matters for how quickly you start feeling better.
Here is what actually matters when evaluating a psychiatrist in Cairo, beyond just picking the first name that appears in a search.
1. Confirm real psychiatric credentials, not just “mental health” branding
In Egypt, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBCH) who has gone on to specialize in psychiatry, typically through a Master’s degree and often a Ph.D. or fellowship in neuropsychiatry. This is different from a psychologist or counselor, who cannot prescribe medication and has a different training path. If medication may be part of your treatment — for conditions like depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, or bipolar disorder — you specifically need a psychiatrist, not just any mental health professional.
A good sign: the psychiatrist’s qualifications, university affiliation, and hospital appointments are stated clearly and specifically, not just “years of experience” as a vague number.
2. Look for subspecialty experience relevant to your situation
Psychiatry is broad. Some psychiatrists focus heavily on mood disorders, others on addiction medicine, others on adolescent mental health. If you are dealing with substance use alongside a mental health condition — which is common — you want someone with specific addiction medicine experience, ideally with a hospital-level role such as directing an addiction unit, not just general practice exposure.
3. Ask what therapeutic approaches are actually used
Medication is often only part of effective psychiatric care. Ask whether the psychiatrist incorporates evidence-based therapy approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or Motivational Interviewing, either personally or through a coordinated care team. A psychiatrist who only prescribes without addressing the underlying patterns you’re trying to change is offering a narrower version of care than what’s available.
4. Decide whether you need online, in-person, or both
Online psychiatric consultations have become a normal, effective option in Egypt, particularly useful for follow-up sessions, medication management, and patients outside Cairo or unable to travel easily. Some situations — a first psychiatric evaluation, more complex cases, or addiction treatment requiring closer monitoring — are often better handled in person, at least initially. A psychiatrist who offers both gives you the flexibility to choose what fits your situation rather than forcing one format.
5. Pay attention to how your first interaction feels
Clinical qualifications get you in the door, but the therapeutic relationship is what makes treatment work. During a first consultation, notice whether you feel heard rather than rushed, whether questions are answered directly, and whether a clear plan is proposed rather than a vague “let’s see.” It is reasonable — and healthy — to switch psychiatrists if the fit isn’t right, the same way you would with any other doctor.
