Online psychiatric consultations have become a genuinely normal part of mental healthcare in Egypt, not a lesser substitute for an in-person visit. Still, if you’ve never done one, not knowing what to expect can itself be a source of hesitation. Here’s what a first online session typically looks like.
Before the session
You’ll usually be asked to provide some background beforehand — what’s bringing you in, relevant medical history, current medications if any, and sometimes a short questionnaire. It helps to find a private, quiet space with a stable internet connection, and to have a notepad handy for anything you want to remember afterward.
During the session
The first session is primarily an evaluation: the psychiatrist will ask detailed questions about your symptoms, how long they’ve been present, their impact on daily life, and relevant personal and family history. This isn’t a quick checklist — a thorough first evaluation is what makes an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan possible, and it typically takes longer than follow-up sessions.
You should leave the first session with a clear sense of what’s being proposed: whether that’s therapy, medication, further evaluation, or a combination, along with a realistic sense of timeline and what the next session will involve.
Privacy and confidentiality
Psychiatric consultations, online or in-person, are held to the same standards of medical confidentiality. It’s reasonable to ask directly how your information is stored and who has access to it before your session if that’s a concern.
When online isn’t enough
Online consultation works well for evaluation, follow-up, and medication management in most cases. Some situations — more complex presentations, certain addiction treatment needs, or any situation involving immediate safety concerns — are better served by in-person care, and a responsible psychiatrist will tell you directly if that’s the case rather than trying to manage everything remotely.
